Alessandro Cagiano De Azevedo
Procurement / Contract Expert

Alessandro joined Studio Pietrangeli in 2003. He has over 18 years’ international experience in dam design, contract management of large civil works, especially dams and hydropower projects.

After graduating in Civil & Hydraulic Engineering at University of Rome in 2000, he worked for private design and construction firms before joining SP. He was responsible for hydraulic calculations, project quality control, design and tender document preparation, contract management, quantity surveying, site supervision activities for hydraulic structures at Abu Dhabi, and then for several civil and maritime works in Italy, before approaching the dam design world.

He has gained remarkable specific expertise as procurement and contract expert in several of SP’s recent dam design projects, being responsible for the preparation of design and tender documents, bid analysis, assistance during negotiations with contractors, management of contractors and sub-contractors. He is also specialised in contractual risk assessment analysis, claims and dispute management.

Frequently on site working in direct contact with the contractors, he is pragmatic and responsive, solving technical and contractual issues connected with dam design and power plants engineering.

His working (but also personal family), life is a continuous tussle between his attempts to organize and prepare his work, in an enduring effort to respect the saying “if you fail to prepare, prepare to fail”, and the daily, ineluctable, last-minute requests, visits or unexpected change of plans (typical of fast-track projects), all of which are the spice of his life.

His extensive international experience in the field of dam design has been acquired as a project manager for several large dams/hydropower projects, recently successfully completed or under construction in Europe and Africa (e.g. GIBE III), many of which funded by IDFs such as World Bank, AfDB, EBRD, etc..
