Description for HV Interconnector (Ethiopia – Kenya)
The assignment, financed by Salini Costruttori S.p.A., consisted of a feasibility study and basic design for the construction of a high voltage transmission line to provide power supply from the Omo Cascade (Gilgel Gibe I, Gibe II, Gibe III) to the capital of Kenya, Nairobi.
This is one of several Studio Pietrangeli’s project dealing with extended transmission system, the first between two different countries.
The project consisted in the design of a mixed AC/DC line of 510 km and 640 km and of two terminal substations with converter stations.
Main Features
- HVAC 400kV, double circuit (L=510 km)
- HVDC ±400kV 2-pole plus a monopole return wire line (L=640 km)
- Terminal substations with converter station (No.2, loading capacity = 1000 MW)
