A highlight from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) inauguration
On 9 September 2025, Ethiopia inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), the largest hydropower plant in Africa. During the official ceremony, Pietro Salini, CEO of WeBuild, paid tribute to Giorgio Pietrangeli, whose vision and engineering expertise were at the origin of the dam’s design.
This recognition celebrates Studio Pietrangeli’s key contribution to GERD, one of the most significant energy infrastructure projects in the world. Conceived in the 1960s to harness the hydropower potential of the Blue Nile, the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam stands today as a landmark for renewable energy production and the excellence of Italian engineering internationally.
